Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Charming

Amulet of Charming

Wondrous Item, Uncommon (requires attunement)

Aura: Minor Enchantment

Anyone who views the wearer of this amulet is inclined to view them favorably. While wearing this amulet, you have advantage the first time you make a Charisma (Persuasion) check while interacting with a creature. Once you use this property, it can’t be used again on the same creature for 24 hours.

Here we go, another magic item from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica converted to 5e. This one is a relatively simple beast- essentially a "good first impressions" amulet that you might swap out when you plan to be doing some carousing or other social encounters and probably a lot less useful while actively out dungeon delving.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Cheetah Speed

Amulet of Cheetah Speed

Wondrous Item, Uncommon (requires attunement)

Aura: Minor Transmutation

This ordinary silver amulet is engraved with the silhouette of a long-legged cat on one side. While wearing the amulet, your speed increases by 10 feet while you are not wearing armor or wielding a shield.

Burst of Speed. When you move on your turn in combat, you can double your speed until the end of the turn. Once you have used this property, it can’t be used again until the next dawn.

Next up on my eternal quest to convert the 2e Encyclopedia Magica to 5e. This one might not let you mind control a fistful of caterpillars, but sometimes you just you gotta go fast.

Encyclopedia: Amulet of Caterpillar Control

Amulet of Caterpillar Control

Wondrous Item, Common

Aura: Faint Enchantment

While wearing this amulet, you can sense the presence of any common caterpillar within 300 feet of you. In addition, you can mentally control the actions of up to two dozen common caterpillars with an Intelligence score of 3 or less.

Next item up on my quest to convert the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. This one is fairly simple and needs little by way of introduction or explanation. Just a fun little trinket that might fit well with any entomologist in the group. No attunement means it doesn't even take away from the fancier magic trinkets you would otherwise be using.

Encyclopedia Magica: Cartographer's Amulet

Cartographer’s Amulet

Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Moderate Divination

This amulet is carved from a large, flawless jacinth and cut into a lens-shaped disc with a platinum setting and chain. The amulet has 3 charges, and it regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. Holding the amulet in your hand and speaking a command word, you can direct it to  display an illusory scale map of your surroundings, with a glowing rune indicating the direction of true North. The area displayed by the illusory map shows how the area would look with normal vision in daylight. When you use this feature, you can indicate whether the map is a small or large area. The illusory map lasts for 1 hour, or until you dismiss it as an action.

A small area shows a detailed map of everything within a 60 foot radius of where the amulet was activated. Everything, including passages, stairways, doors, as well as any objects are displayed in the exact positions they were located when the command word was spoken. The amulet does not show creatures, nor does it reveal traps or secret doors (though a passage with no doors leading to it might imply a secret door somewhere).

A large area shows a general map of everything within a 10-mile radius of where the amulet was activated. The map shows large geographical features, such as rivers, bridges and hills, as well as buildings. The map does not show any creatures or objects smaller than a house.

So here is one more magic item conversion from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica to 5e. This time, it's an amulet to help out with all your mapping needs! I'm not sure if I wouldn't just prefer a ring of x-ray vision when going through a dungeon, but being able to get a ten mile map while exploring as well is always nice.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of the Cairn Hills

 Amulet of the Cairn Hills

Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Moderate Abjuration

A favorite among grave robbers, this amulet provides some protection against attacks from powerful undead. The amulet has thirteen charges. Whenever you would take necrotic damage while wearing the amulet, you may use your reaction and expend one charge from the amulet to gain resistance to necrotic damage until the end of your next turn, including against the triggering attack.

In addition, if you would have one of your ability scores or hit point maximum reduced by a spell or other magical effect, you may use your reaction and expend two charges from the amulet to negate that reduction.

Once you expend the last charge, the amulet crumbles into dust.

So here we are with another magic item from the old 2e Encyclopedia Magica, converted into something usable in 5e. This one is intended to keep you going through a potential encounter or two with some of the stronger sorts of undead, negating or mitigating some of their more debilitating effects. Unlike many magic items though, this one has limited charges, so casually using it to reduce minor amounts of necrotic damage might not be the best utilization of this amulet.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of the Beast (Ivory)

 Amulet of the Beast (Ivory)

Wondrous Item, Very Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Strong Transmutation

An Amulet of the Beast shows the image of a wild, wolfish beast bonded in chains. Though it is clearly magical, the identify spell does not reveal any properties, which are apparent only when a creature becomes attuned to the amulet.

Curse. Once a creature has attuned to this amulet, they are afflicted with a specific form of the Curse of Lycanthrope. The kind of lycanthrope is determined when the amulet is first created and cannot be changed. Though any kind of lycanthrope can be chosen, werewolf is by far the most common choice for an Ivory Amulet of the Beast.

Next up on the list while converting the old 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e-ready content is a follow-up to the Amulet of the Beast (Silver). This one, unlike the silver variety, has a bit of the opposite effect- turning you into a lycanthrope rather than negating some of your powers as one. It's an interesting way to introduce whatever variety of were-creature you want in your game in a way beyond the more traditional bitey means (and definitely a decent wrench to throw in the gears of players who like to put on and attune to everything even if they don't know what it does).

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of the Beast (Silver)

 Amulet of the Beast (Silver)

Wondrous Item, Rare

Aura: Moderate Abjuration

An Amulet of the Beast shows the image of a wild, wolfish beast bonded in chains. On any creature other than a lycanthrope, the amulet does nothing. So long as a lycanthrope is wearing the amulet, their curse is suppressed. Upon initially donning the amulet, they instantly revert to their original form and cannot change forms until the amulet is removed.

So, one of a pair of lycanthrope-themed items for 5e, converted over from the old 2e Encyclopedia Magica. I figure if you've got someone who likes to do wacky things in combat other than just swinging their sword or eldritch blasting their way to victory, then "I try to put the amulet on the werewolf" might be a swell time. Of course, sometimes shit happens and you just happen to get bit, in which case this might be a decent stopgap until someone comes along who can break a curse or two..

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Arachnid Control

 Amulet of Arachnid Control

Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Moderate Conjuration and Enchantment

While you wear this amulet, arachnids recognize you as a companion and ally. As an action, you can choose one arachnid you can see within 30 feet and attempt to control it. It must be able to see and hear you. If the arachnid’s intelligence is 4 or higher, this ability has no effect. Otherwise, the arachnid must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC 15) or be charmed by you for the next hour. While charmed in this way, the arachnid can understand verbal commands you give it, which it follows to the best of its ability. If you use this ability again, or if you or one of your companions harms the target, the effect ends.

Conjure Spiders. As an action, you can cast the conjure animals spell, which automatically summons a pair of giant spiders instead of any other kinds of beast. Once you have used this property, it can’t be used again until the next dawn.

So pretty straightforward item converted from 5e from the old Encyclopedia Magica. Be besties with big spiders, tell them to fight for you! Seems like a solid fit for any drow-themed campaign, either to round out your appropriately edgy set of magic items as your drow PC, or to disrupt spider-based shenanigans brought forth by hostile drow villains.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Amiability

Amulet of Amiability

Wondrous Item, Very Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Strong Enchantment and Transmutation

This amulet of unassuming appearance nevertheless contains great power. You gain a +3 bonus to AC and saving throws while you wear this amulet. In addition, as an action you can conjure either a plate of chocolate chip cookies or a bouquet of fresh flowers, which last for an hour, until consumed or until you use this ability to conjure the same object again.

Curse. This amulet is cursed, and becoming attuned to it extends the curse to you. As long as you remain cursed, you are unwilling to part with the amulet and will attempt to wear it at all times. Regardless of race, class or alignment, you become incredibly nice, kind and thoughtful. You cannot do anything directly or indirectly harmful to yourself or others, even when directly attacked. In addition, you act in an exceptionally helpful manner, and will pursue reasonable courses of action suggested by others as though under the effects of a Suggestion spell.

So, next up while converting the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e we have the Amulet of Amiability. So, on the surface it definitely seems like the sort of item that the person identifying will absolutely want to attune to as soon as possible, though hopefully not too dramatically over the top strong that they will be immediately suspicious. Ideal scenario is that they walk right into a curse, then have some weird shenanigans before their allies find their way into a remove curse spell. Then, they can feel free to try and trick one of their villains to attune to it instead.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet Against Disease

Against Disease

Wondrous Item, Common

Aura: Faint Abjuration

This amulet provides protection against a single disease, chosen when the amulet is created. While wearing the amulet, you are immune to contracting the chosen disease. If you already have that disease, the effects of the disease are suppressed while you wear the amulet.

Here's a short and sweet common item from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica, updated for use in 5e. If this seems familiar, that's because it's very similar to another magic item: Periapt of Health. The main difference here is that, rather than protecting against all diseases, it only fight against one specific one. The trade-off bein that it is only a common item and thus much more readily available and/or craftable than its uncommon cousin.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet Against Crystal Balls and ESP

Amulet Against Crystal Balls and ESP

Wondrous Item, Uncommon (requires attunement)

Aura: Minor Abjuration

While wearing this amulet, you are protected from divination magic and magical scrying as though under the effects of a Nondetection spell.

I'm not going to defend the name of this item too vigorously here. The sheer number of magic items contained in the Encyclopedia Magica is quite staggering- the A-D edition is over 400 pages by itself. Still, I think the effect is solid and falls in a similar niche as the Ring of Mind Shielding.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of the Abyss

Amulet of the Abyss

Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement by a character of evil alignment))

Aura: Moderate Conjuration and Divination

These amulets are often worn by honored guests while traveling through certain areas of the Abyss. They usually take the form of an adamantine disk hung from a silver chain, with the name of the areas the wearer is allowed to access inscribed in Abyssal.

The amulet has 4 charges. While you wear it, you can use an action to cast one of the following spells from it: Summon Lesser Demons (expends 1 charge) or Commune (expends 2 charges). The amulet is typically linked to a particular fiend. When you cast Commune using the amulet , you can automatically contact the fiend linked to the amulet instead of your deity or divine proxy.

The amulet regains 1 expended charge daily at dawn. If the amulet is reduced to 0 charges, roll a d20. On a 1, the amulet disappears in a flash of fire and reappears in the possession of the linked fiend the following day.

More text Continuing on the quest to convert every item from the Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. Following the Acorn of Wo Mai, here's another fiend-themed item. Perfectly suited for when a party inevitably has to travel down into the abyss for high-stakes shenanigans and demonic apocalypse-averting quests.
