Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Holy Turning

Amulet of Holy Turning

Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Moderate Evocation

Shaped like the blessed symbol of a deity, it bestows a sliver of divine power unto the wearer, granting them some of the power of a divine cleric. Whenever there is an undead within 120 feet of the amulet it begins to glow, shedding bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet.

Turn Undead. As an action, you can present this amulet and unleash its power. Each undead that can see or hear you within 30 feet of you must make a Wisdom saving throw. If the creature fails its saving throw, it is turned for 1 minute or until it takes any damage.

A turned creature must spend its turns trying to move as far away from you as it can, and it can't willingly move to a space within 30 feet of you. It also can't take reactions. For its action, it can use only the Dash action or try to escape from an effect that prevents it from moving. If there's nowhere to move, the creature can use the Dodge action.

Once you have used this feature, you cannot do so again until the next dawn.

Here's one more magic item converted from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. This one is your undead radar/zombie blaster amulet for the party without a proper cleric (or the cleric that wants even more firepower to blast through Barovia).

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of the Hero

Amulet of the Hero

Wondrous Item, Very Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Strong Conjuration

This amulet has three charges. While wearing the amulet, you can use an action to call forth a hero, which appears in an unoccupied space you can see within 30 feet of you. The hero lasts for 1 hour and will fight for you for that duration. The hero uses the statistics of a gladiator (the GM has the creature's statistics) and acts immediately after you in initiative. The hero is friendly to you and your companions and obeys and verbal commands that you issue to it. If you don’t issue any commands to it, the hero defends itself from hostile creatures, but otherwise takes no actions.

When the hour ends, or if the hero falls to 0 hit points, or ends its turn more than 300 feet away from you, the hero disappears. If you use the amulet to summon a second hero, your current hero disappears.

The amulet regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the amulet crumbles to dust and is destroyed.

One more magic item converted from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. This one is for when you just gotta have more guys to fight for you, but don't want to have to deal with summoning spells (or just can't cast spells to begin with).

Encyclopedia Magica: Hardwater Amulet

Hardwater Amulet

Wondrous Item, Rare (Requires Attunement)

Aura: Moderate Transmutation

This starburst amulet made of clear crystal, when activated, can harden the surface of liquid surfaces. While you wear it, you can move across any such surfaces- such as water, acid, mud, snow, quicksand, or lava- as if it were harmless solid ground (crossing molten lava can still cause damage from the heat). If you are submerged in a liquid, you are carried to the surface at the rate of 60 feet per round.  You can deactivate or reactivate this effect at any time as a bonus action.

Hardwater Bolt. While wearing the amulet, you can launch bolts of hardened liquid as projectiles so long as a source of liquid of at least 1 gallon  is within 10 feet of you. These bolts count as simple ranged weapons with which you are proficient (range 60/180) and deal 2d8 bludgeoning damage on a hit.

One more magic item converted from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. For those who really like being able to use the water walk spell at will and occasionally smack a baddie with some waterbending nonsense now and again.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Health

Amulet of Health

Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Moderate Transmutation

Your Constitution score is 19 while you wear this amulet. It has no effect on you if your Constitution is already 19 or higher without it.

One more magic item converted from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. The Amulet of Health already exists in 5e so this entry is mostly identical, only this time with an added aura for your Detect Magic viewing pleasure.

Encyclopedia Magica: Greenstone Amulet

Greenstone Amulet

Wondrous Item, Legendary (requires attunement)

Aura: Very Strong Abjuration

These rare, fist-sized green stones are made by a forgotten magical process to confer powerful protections. The amulet has 10 charges and glows with a bright green light so long as any charges remain. Whenever you are targeted or included in the area of effect of a Divination or Enchantment spell, that spell fails and has no effect if its level is equal to or less than the number of charges remaining in the amulet. When the amulet causes a spell to fail, a number of charges are expended equal to the level of the spell.

So long as the amulet has at least 1 charge remaining, creatures cannot sense your emotions, read your thoughts or communicate with you telepathically, and you are immune to psychic damage.

The amulet regains 1d6 charges each day at dawn.

One more magic item from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica converted to 5e. This one is a bit more powerful than many of the others, to the point of giving you a limited sort of immunity to entire schools of magic, so long as it still has charges left. It makes no distinction between friend and foe, so make sure if you have someone who likes to drop buffs that they check their schools first.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of the Golden Collar

Amulet of the Golden Collar

Wondrous Item, Rare (Requires Attunement)

Aura: Moderate Abjuration

Originally designed to help a mummy free itself from its bandages on the long journey to the afterlife, this amulet serves to help one break free from any magical or nonmagical bonds. While you wear the amulet, your movement is unaffected by difficult terrain, and spells and other magical effects can neither reduce your speed nor cause you to be paralyzed, restrained or grappled. Additionally, you can use an action to automatically escape from magical or nonmagical restraints.

One more magic item, converted from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. This one has a sort of freedom of movement feel that's always on, ready to to help you close in on whatever you need to.

Encyclopedia Magica: Furyondy’s Amulet

Furyondy’s Amulet

Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Moderate Abjuration

This amulet was created to protect its wearer and ward off evil magic. The amulet has three charges, and regains 1d3 charges daily at dawn. So long as you are wearing the amulet, you can expend one charge to cast remove curse, targeting yourself. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the amulet loses its properties and becomes a nonmagical amulet.

Another 2e magic item converted from the Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. Pretty basic, some self-targeting remove curses, so you can test out all the new shiny things your party picks up without having to worry about getting stuck with a cursed item for too long.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Finding

Amulet of Finding

Wondrous Item, Uncommon (requires attunement)

Aura: Minor Divination

Amulets of Finding come in pairs, with each one linked to the other. While attuned to the amulet, you know whether another creature is wearing the linked amulet. So long as both amulets are being worn, either creature wearing one of the amulets can use an action to see through the eyes of the creature wearing the linked amulet until the start of their next turn, gaining the benefits of any special senses that the linked creature has. During that time, they are blind with regard to their own senses.

Another item converted from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica to 5e. This one is similar in concept to the classic Sending Stones magic item, only for linking senses rather than direct communication.

Encyclopedia Magica: Fiend Amulet

Fiend Amulet

Wondrous Item, Legendary

Aura: Very Strong Necromancy

Certain powerful Fiends create these amulets to maintain their essence, at once protecting themselves while also leaving themselves vulnerable. When it is created, the Fiend inscribes its true name into the amulet, which is bound to it until it is destroyed. If the Fiend dies while in its home plane its essence is drawn into the amulet rather than being destroyed. After 24 hours, the Fiend reforms in the nearest unoccupied space to the amulet. If the amulet is destroyed while it contains a Fiend’s essence, that Fiend is destroyed forever.

Another magic item from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica converted to 5e. The Fiend Amulet is something that I feel often gets touched on in lore, but so far hasn't had a 5e set of stats- so here it is!

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Far Reaching

Amulet of Far Reaching

Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Moderate Transmutation

This amulet has 10 charges. While wearing the amulet, whenever you cast a spell using a 3rd-level slot or lower that has a range of 5 feet or greater, you can spend 1 charge per spell level to double the range of the spell. When you cast a spell using a 3rd-level slot or lower that has a range of touch, you can spend 1 charge per spell level to make the range of the spell 30 feet. The amulet regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn.

Another conversion from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e, the follow up to a very similar item: Amulet of Extension, both of which follow the theme of replicating a specific sorcerer metamagic ability and making it available to anyone with spell slots.

Amulet of Extension

Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Moderate Transmutation

This amulet has 10 charges. While wearing the amulet, whenever you cast a spell using a 3rd-level slot or lower that has a duration of 1 minute or longer, you can spend 1 charge per spell slot level to double its duration, to a maximum of 24 hours. The amulet regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn.

Another item converted from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. Here's one of a few that end up effectively just replicating metamagic abilities from sorcerers.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Emotions

Amulet of Emotions

Wondrous Item, Uncommon (requires attunement)

Aura: Minor Illusion

While wearing this amulet, it magically alters your appearance to match your emotions at the moment, to a greatly exaggerated degree. Whenever you make a Charisma (Intimidation) or Charisma (Performance) check, you may roll a d4 and add the number rolled to that check.

Curse. The wearer of this amulet is cursed. The illusions created by this amulet make it easy to read your current emotional state. Other creatures have advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks they make against you.

Another magic item converted from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. The more I go through this project, the more I realize just how much 2e loved cursed items. 5e has since pulled way back from that, to the point where I can only think of a handful off the top of my head. Still, in the spirit of trying to stay as faithful as possible to the originals, here comes a truckload of curses.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Elemental Command

Amulet of Elemental Command

Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement)

Aura: Moderate Conjuration

While wearing this amulet, you can use an action to cast the conjure elemental spell. The amulet can’t be used again this way until the next dawn.

Here we go, one more item from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica converted to 5e. This one's short and sweet, essentially just the Bowl of Commanding Water Elementals, only with more options available.

Encyclopedia Magica: Draskillion’s Amulet of Life

 Draskillion’s Amulet of Life

Wondrous Item, Very Rare (requires attunement by a non-undead, non-construct creature)

Aura: Strong Abjuration and Enchantment

This amulet is constructed to serve to protect and preserve the life of the wearer. When the creature wearing the amulet dies, their soul is immediately absorbed into the amulet, unless it already houses a soul. A soul within the amulet can remain in the amulet or depart for the afterlife. As long as a soul is within the amulet, it can attempt to possess the creature currently wearing and attuned to the amulet. When it does so, it makes a Charisma check contested by the wearer’s Charisma check. If they succeed, the wearer’s soul is drawn into the amulet while at the same time the soul currently occupying the amulet possesses the body of the wearer. Once a creature attempts to possess the wearer of the amulet it cannot do so again for 24 hours.

A soul retains its alignment, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma. It otherwise uses the possessed target’s statistics, but doesn't gain access to the target’s knowledge, class features, or proficiencies.

Curse. Any creature that touches the amulet feels a strong compulsion to wear it. That creature must succeed on a DC16 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, they keep the amulet and attempt to attune to it the next time they have an opportunity. Once a creature attunes to and starts wearing the amulet, it cannot be removed until the curse is broken.

Here it is, another 2e magic item from the Encyclopedia Magica converted to 5e. This is a slightly more involved item than, say, the one for controlling caterpillars. It's used to try and not die, done through possession and whatever moral quandaries that brings up.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Dramatic Death

Amulet of Dramatic Death

Wondrous Item, Legendary (requires attunement)

Aura: Very Strong Abjuration

There are only six of these amulets known to have been created, to protect the wearer from particularly devastating attacks. When you would drop to 0 hit points as a result of taking damage, or if you are subjected to an effect that would kill you instantaneously without dealing damage, that source of damage or effect is negated. When this happens, you turn invisible and an illusory copy of you appears in your space. The illusory copy appears to be struck and slain by the attack or effect that triggered it in a complete and dramatic fashion. You remain invisible for 1 minute, or until you attack or cast a spell. Your illusory copy remains for 1 minute.  Once this property activates, it can’t activate again until the next dawn.

Well, another conversion from the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. This one is both useful and also properly melodramatic. Basically just take a disintegrate to the face and tiptoe on out of there while they get to gloat over your dust pile, only to take a fireball to the face when you're better positioned.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Dragon Warding

Amulet of Dragon Warding

Wondrous Item, Very Rare (requires attunement by a creature of good alignment)

Aura: Strong Abjuration

This amulet glows with a pure gold light, providing protection from evil dragons. While you wear this amulet, you cannot be frightened and have resistance to the following damage types: Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, Poison.

Another entry here as I work to convert the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. This time we're going with an amulet specifically designed to oppose Tiamat and all her chromatic cronies, both in resisting their breath weapons as well as their frightful presence.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Communication

Amulet of Communication

Wondrous Item, Uncommon

Aura: Minor Divination

These amulets are favored by diplomatic representatives. When worn, the amulet allows the wearer to understand, speak and write one particular language. The language is chosen at the time the amulet is created and cannot be changed.

The next entry on my quest to convert the 2e Encyclopedia Magica into 5e. This one needs little by way of explanation- just a sweet little tool for diplomacy, made better by the lack of attunement necessary, so you really don't shoot yourself in the foot by having it on hand.

Encyclopedia Magica: Amulet of Charm Resistance

Amulet of Charm Resistance

Wondrous Item, Uncommon (requires attunement)

Aura: Minor Abjuration

These small amulets, typically made of brass or bronze, are imbued with a measure of protective fey magic. While wearing the amulet, you have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.

Here it is, another 2e magic item from the Encyclopedia Magica converted for use in 5e. Short and sweet, it functions pretty much exactly as advertised, pretty much the same as the fey ancestry trait of elves.
